Hagman revealed in October 2011 that he had been diagnosed with a "very common and treatable form" of the disease, but was able to film his role in the first season of TNT's revived Dallas.

The Hagman family said in a statement Friday evening: "Larry was back in his beloved Dallas, re-enacting the iconic role he loved most. Larry's family and close friends had joined him in Dallas for the Thanksgiving holiday.

"When he passed, he was surrounded by loved ones. It was a peaceful passing, just as he had wished for. The family requests privacy at this time."

The actor's Dallas co-stars Linda Gray and Patrick Duffy are reported to have been at his bedside at the time of his death, according to The Sun.
Hagman rose to fame in the 1960s as Tony Nelson on the classic NBC sitcom I Dream of Jeannie opposite Barbara Eden, but his most icionic role came as Dallas's often-devious JR Ewing, heir to the lucrative Ewing Oil corporation.

Dallas proved to be one of the biggest hits on American television in the late 1970s and 1980s, with an estimated 83 million people tuning in for the infamous November1980 'Who Shot JR' episode.

Hagman earned a pair of Emmy nominations for playing JR Ewing in 1980 and 1981 and four Golden Globe nominations throughout the show's run.

The actor continued working steadily when Dallas ended in May 1991, appearing in Primary Colours and the television series Desperate Housewives.

He returned to the role of JR Ewing in TNT's revived Dallas series along with original co-stars Gray and Duffy.

Dallas was renewed for a second season by TNT in June, but it is not yet known what effect Hagman's death will have on the programme.

Hagman is survived by his wife Maj Axelsson and their adult children Heidi and Preston.
