Almost a decade after the Atari 2600 made its way into people's homes, Nintendo released the first of its successful gaming consoles to the world market.
Ironically, Atari passed on distributing the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) outside Japan. So, Nintendo cosied up with Worlds of Wonder of Teddy Ruxpin fame to get the machine into selected US toy stores in time for the holidays in 1985.
With the likes of Duck Hunt, Super Mario Bros. and more being released on the 8-bit system, the NES propelled Nintendo to the forefront of the gaming industry and turned the Kyoto-based company into a household name.
By 1988, NES was the console of choice in the US and the term “Nintendo Nation” was coined. You could eat Zelda cereal and watch Mario Bros. on TV...
