The instantly recognisable rotary telephone has had a makeover for the 21st century

SagemCom's Sixty phone is a new take on a design classic

The classic rotary dial telephone has been given a makeover for the digital age. Gone is the coiled cable that was attached to the design that the Post Office distributed to customers around the country, although SagemCom’s reinterpretation is an otherwise affectionate tribute.

The original rotary dial telephones went through a number of incarnations after their introduction in the Thirties, but the design that became most famous was introduced in 1959. It was in part a response to public desire for a telephone similar to those seen in American films.

SagemCom’s new version is called the Sixty, and the company has replaced the traditional central dial where users could fill in their phone number with a touchscreen. Produced in lurid orange, it offers 10 hours of talk time. The design replaces the solid structure of the original with a single piece of plastic that is apparently folded in half to replicate the recognisable shape. Despite being significantly smaller and lighter, it also however includes an answering machine capable of storing 20 minutes of messages.

When distributed by the Post Office, original British telephones often came included in the cost of connection. The Sixty, however, will cost £99.99 when it is available from June.

Commodore 64 returns for retro technology fans

The Commodore 64, an icon of 1980s computing, is returning to take advantage of the appetite for retro technology.

The original Commodore 64

The original introduced a generation to the possibilities of home computing - including classic videogames such as Elite and International Karate.

Now it is being relaunched with an up-to-date WIndows PC under its original 1980s shell.

A new company, Commodore USA, is taking orders for the machine. Commodore International, responsible for the 8-bit original, went bankrupt in 1994.

The modern version features a dual-core Intel Atom D525 processor at 1.8GHz and 2GB of RAM. It will ship with emulator software to run original Commodore 64 programmes, which had to make to with MOS 6502 processor at 1MHz and 64K of RAM.

And while 1980s Commodore 64 programmes came on cassette tapes or floppy disks, its modern imitator has a USB ports, WiFi, a multiformat memory card reader and optional Blu-Ray drive.

Irvin Kershner Has Died

Irvin Kershner - the man who gave us some of the most indelible moments in cinema history with The Empire Strikes Back - has died. He was 87.
Kersh, as he was fondly known, died at his home following a long illness.
He was, of course, best known for directing The Empire Strikes Back, arguably the greatest chapter in the Star Wars saga (and which celebrates its thirtieth anniversary this year). But Kershner also made contributions to other franchises, directing RoboCop 2 and Sean Connery's last appearance as James Bond in the 'unofficial' 007 flick, Never Say Never Again.
Having fought in World War II, Kershner began his career by teaching film at the University of Southern California, but quickly made the move behind the camera via a detour as a stills photographer and TV director, calling the shots on Stakeout On Dope Street in 1958.
A decent career followed, in which he directed the likes of Sean Connery in A Fine Madness, Richard Harris in The Return Of A Man Called Horse, and Faye Dunaway in 1978's Eyes Of Laura Mars (based on John Carpenter's screenplay).
It was this movie that persuaded George Lucas, looking for someone to take the reins on his Star Wars sequel, to approach Kershner to direct The Empire Strikes Back. The rest is movie history: Kershner's no-frills storytelling style, coupled with a strong script and an imaginative visual pallet, gave Empire a gravitas that marked it out as an instant classic.
Kershner only directed twice more on film, with Never Say Never Again and Robocop 2, but he also made a habit of appearing in films, showing up in Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation Of Christ and, of all places, Steven Seagal's On Deadly Ground.
His last contribution to film was a cameo as Statistics Professor in the 2005 film, Berkeley - but Kershner's unmistakeable contribution to film history had already been made. For Yoda, for Vader telling Luke, "I am your father", for Cloud City, for Lando, for the battle of Hoth, for the asteroid field chase, for Boba Fett, for Lobot, for Wampas, for Tauntauns, for "I thought they smelt bad... on the outside!", for "I love you"/"I know", for Chewie screaming in pain as Han is frozen in carbonite, and for the Empire striking back, we'll never forget the legendary Irvin Kershner. Rest in peace, Kersh.

In our regular series about makers, hackers and amateur technologists, BBC News meets the people giving the classic BBC Micro a new lease of life.

Computer history is cruel. It is a story of the old constantly being pushed aside for the newer, the faster, the smaller, the shinier.
Those old machines are rarely allowed a graceful retirement. Cast aside, they end their days in the dark ,fit only to be homes for spiders in lofts and cupboards.
But one lucky flock of BBC Micros is getting another lease of life by helping to educate students in the art of rigorous programming.
The National Museum of Computing (TNMOC) at Bletchley Park has started letting a few lucky A-level students loose on the machines to hone their programming skills.
"The computing A-level is about how computers work and if you ask anyone how it works they will not be able to tell you," said Doug Abrams, an ICT teacher from Ousedale School in Newport Pagnell, who was one of the first to use the machines in lessons.

The BBC Micro has an unforgiving interface

For Mr Abrams the old machines have two cardinal virtues; their sluggishness and the direct connection they have with the user.
In one of the first lessons held at TNMOC the lucky Ousedale students programmed a venerable PDP-8 machine by flicking the switches set on its front panel to set the binary values in its memory. And an interface does not get more direct than that.
"Modern computers go too fast," said Mr Abrams. "You can see the instructions happening for real with these machines. They need to have that understanding for the A-level."
Cranking code The second time the students got to use the BBC Micros they were given three hours to create a simple 8-bit game. Tech Know was there to record what happened.
Prior to the lesson Mr Abrams had produced 100 lines of code that created a rough version of the game pitting a battleship against a bomber. The students' task was to refine the game by introducing a scoring system, improving its looks and introducing new elements such as a hunter-killer submarine.
Two students tackled the bugs and refinements, two the graphics and sounds and the remaining student got to work typing the program onto other machines so testing could get going.
The five soon discovered that just because a program was simple did not mean the underlying code was straight-forward. To make matters more testing, the BBC Micro offers a very unforgiving programming environment.

Micro Live focussed on computing issues with the BBC Micro, Spectrum, Olivetti and other machines. This episode is from 17th October 1986.

For much of their A-level, the students had been using Visual Basic - a breeze by comparison.
"Because there's no copy and paste, if you do something wrong it takes time to go back and fix it," said Joe Gritton. "You cannot take out sections and move them around."
Be the machine Perry Gemmell lamented the lack of friendly interface on the BBC Micro, which presents users with a screen full of text.
"It's easier to find bugs in Visual Basic," he said. "It helps you as you go along."
Visual Basic suggests words while a coder types, highlights syntax errors and makes bug hunts easier by jumping straight to the problematic code - even when the error is one of logic rather than letters.
By contrast, the BBC Micro is a study in imperious indifference. Get something wrong and the program will crash and perhaps throw up an error message. Worse are the cases when it works but not in the way expected leaving the programmer to scratch their head and try to work out why.
The machines also enforced a parsimonious programming style. A memory of only 32K is a shoebox in comparison to the Lordly halls of memory available on the average 21st-Century desktop.

The simple program that the students were working on threw up some real problems.

Mr Gritton and partner Callum Adams were given the task of adding a submarine. But, they realised, the introduction of the torpedo-firing sub would spell the end of the game, as the ship had no way to avoid it.
Changing one element in the simple game kicked off the need to solve lots of separate problems - it was a real exercise in creative coding. The students had their eyes on the screen and their hands in the bits.
"We're learning a lot," said Callum Adams. "It makes you realise how difficult it is making real video games."
The day of study had begun with what must be the ultimate hands-on technology experience: Mr Abrams got the students to be a computer.
They each took on the role of a different part of the machine - CPU, accumulator, RAM and program counter - and simulated the passage of instructions through the hardware.
The five shuffled data around, wrote it to memory, carried out computations and inserted them into the right places in the store.
It was a noisy, confusing and funny simulation and, once everyone knew what they were doing, managed to reach a maximum clock speed of about one instruction per minute.
And even the BBC Micro, for all its age, can beat that.

Makers Glade tracked down Jenny for the remake to mark 30 years since the famous clip first aired.
Sprightly Jenny - who throws herself around the room in the new clip - said she was thrilled to take part.

Police Academy 'to be relaunched'

Police Academy made Steve Guttenberg a household name

Comedy series Police Academy, which began life in 1984, is set to return to the big screen, according to reports.

New Line cinema is rebooting the franchise with original producer Paul Maslansky returning, The Hollywood Reporter said.

No writer or director has attached their name to the new version as yet.

The original film, which starred Steve Guttenberg, was released in 1984 and spawned six more movies and a TV show grossing $240m (£158m) worldwide.

'New talent'

"It's going to be very worthwhile to the people who remember it and to those who saw it on TV," Maslansky said.

"It's going to be a new class. We hope to discover new talent and season it with great comedians.

"It'll be anything but another movie with a numeral next to it. And we'll most probably retain the wonderful musical theme."

The first Police Academy film featured Steve Guttenberg as Carey Mahoney, a repeat offender forced to enter the academy.

Sex in the City actress Kim Cattrall also starred as one of the recruits in the movie which introduced characters including gentle giant Moses Hightower, gun-crazy Tackleberry, mousy Hooks and human sound effects machine Larvell Jones.

The series ended in 1994 with the seventh film, Mission to Moscow.
